BYOD

From 2025 the Te Matauru Primary Board of Trustees has made the decision to revise our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) policy.

The expectation from 2025 onwards is that students from Year 5-8 will have their own device to use each day.

Why BYOD?
BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is when students bring their own device to school to assist their learning. The expectation is that students from Years 5-8, will have their own device to use each day.

Benefits of BYOD:

Why have Chromebooks been chosen?
A Chromebook is a personal computer running Google Chrome OS as its operating system. The device is designed to be used while connected to the Internet and support applications that reside on the Web, rather than traditional applications that reside on the machine itself. All the data is stored in the “cloud” and is accessed by an internet connection. The operating system updates automatically every six weeks, and a Chromebook can potentially last as long as 10 years. A Chromebook also works extremely well with our Linewize monitoring system that keeps our students safe online, and allows teachers to monitor students during school hours. Chromebooks are also what is recommended by Rangiora High School for students.

Te Matauru Primary will have some Chromebooks available to check out from the office if required, but availability cannot be guaranteed therefore it is beneficial for students in our senior school to have their own device.

Buying a Chromebook:
We have a range of partners that have BYOD Chromebook deals for our school community, please see the links below and if you have any questions please contact the school office on: office@tematauru.school.nz

Setting up your Chromebook

Chromebooks will most likely not be used in the first week of school, and will need to be connected to the wifi by Chelsea in the office, since there will be a few to process we ask that these are bought to the office named. The best way to setup your Chromebook is to create a home user profile, and a school one. Most of our Year 5-8 students will know their school email and password, and can create their school user profile themselves. If not Chelsea will assist them with this. The common issue we do have when creating the school user profile is that parents will have set up parental controls for creating profiles, which is great! But this may mean we will send your child’s school details home with them so you can create their school user profile at home with you so you can approve this through your parental controls. Once they have their school profile, everything that we need them to have is on there, and it is monitored by our awesome Linewize systems.

Linewize Information
The school is using safeguarding and monitoring technology to help keep you safer online and ensure you use your device as best as possible to support your learning.

If you use a school device at any time of day, the school and teachers can monitor your activity to support you better.

The school is responsible for its devices, networks and Google accounts, 24/7. If you use your school-issued Google account to sign into Chrome on a personal Chromebook at any time of the day, including at home, we will also be monitoring the activity within that Chrome session. Please be especially aware of this when you are not at school. Because it is a school Google account, we need to ensure it is used safely all the time, wherever and whenever it is being used. Know that this may include taking screenshots of personal Chromebooks if risky behaviour is detected when the school Google account is being used on it.

Importantly for BYOD, the technology being used will only monitor activity within the Chromebook session signed in with the school Google account. The technology cannot monitor activity beyond the school account's Chrome session. Therefore, if you are undertaking personal activities, do not use the school Google account to do so. Use a personal Google account to sign into the Chromebook. That account is your and/or your parents' responsibility to manage.

If you have any questions or concerns on the monitoring and safeguarding technology we are using, please see www.linewize.io/legal.
